Count your Blessings

I talked at length today with my cousin about her husband who was 'lost' last week for more than twenty hours after sending their daughter to school. My cousin and family went to Brisbane to see their daughter who is studying at the University of Queensland more than three weeks ago, and her husband and the youngest daughter came back earlier.

One day last week he send his daughter to school in the morning but something strange happened when his daughter had to guide him on the directions and after dropping her off, she had the instinct to call her brothers who were at work informing them about the incident. After being alerted of the situation, the eldest son immediately tried to locate him to no avail. It took the son and the daughter to be on the road for ten hours trying to locate him and a police report was made saying that he was missing.

To cut the story short, their father managed to find his way back home at 2230 hrs much to everyone relief. It seemed that he went to visit his ex-colleague in Putrajaya and then he reported to the police on the loss of his car. Actually he had forgotten where he parked it and then with the help of his colleague's staff and then drove home. But instead of home he drove a total distance of 700 kilometres for the whole day trying to figure out where his house is.

After this incident his sons brought him to see a neurologist and he was diagnosed as vascular dementia. It meant he had a silent mild stroke which affected the brain and thus contributed to his lapse of memory.

When I am told of his predicament, I am grateful to ALLAH S.W.T for the Blessings bestowed to me in the form of an active mind and a relatively healthy body. I still have the risk factors but it is under control and God Willing I intend to keep it that way. One of the ways of keeping the mind active is lifelong learning and thus I keep busy at the keyboard, much to the consternation of my wife sometimes. But that is how to keep up with knowledge instantly nowadays and the most effective method of communicating with my friends. I supplicate to ALLAH S.W.T. that I am always protected from such a condition and manage to have a healthy mind, body and soul.

Dear Hal,
Vascular dementia so it is. Is it not dangerous? If it is mild and silent now what is the possibility of one that is, a real stroke happening sometime in the near future. This is a vital warning sign that things ain’t going to be the same again. It is true for us too if we are not careful.

A mild stroke is prompted by a high reading of blood pressure possibly of 200+ for the top and a corresponding 100+ possibly for the bottom. My younger brother who went for a routine check had such a reading and was warded. The Dr didn’t dare take a chance.

Blogging is refreshing as you’ve said. That’s true. It gave me the opportunity to google for facts and maintain some sanity which otherwise I don’t have the reason nor the occasion to do. Keep at it!

Hank,
You got it right on the marked target, it was due to his failure to continue his medication for his hypertension which he had for sometime and treated at Selayang Hospital. When the follow-up at Kelana Jaya polyclinic was supposed to be continued, it was neglected after he went there a few times, so that could have led to the silent stroke.
The neurologist said the condition is treatable but he must keep to the medication regime without let-up. The family now is closely monitoring his condition and the regular appointment must be kept with the neurologist.
Apart from our jogging of the mind, most crucial is that we must keep our relationship with our Creator closer than ever and also we must keep in touch with our relatives often so as to continue the silaturrahim.

Dear Hal,
One of the most precious gifts to me at this age is memory, one of His many many gifts. Is life meaningful without this? Sunhanallah al-Azim.

Akhi Halim, on the verge of entering the month of Ramadhan it's rewarding to recount the blessings that Allah Subhanahuwataala Has bestowed on us. We see a lot of pitiful things happening around us, sometimes affecting our own kith and kin, as has happened to your cousin's husband. Though it's still a very minor and temporary thing, one must be careful to keep it in check and to keep praying to Allah so that it will not become serious. I agree full heartedly with you and Akhi Hank that we must keep the mind and memory busy to avoid any lapses. Hence the need for continuous reading, blogging and googling to pick up new ideas and info, to churn them up in our head and make a new sense of the many nonsense that we see in today's life.
I guess we should get in touch with more of the POP group ( Persatuan Orng-orang pencen) members, so that more will join the blogging enterprise. Surprisingly I see very few names of pensioners on the website. Maybe I don't know the
existence of their blogs. If you do please spread out the words. Selamat Berpuasa.

Ya Akhi and Pak Cik,
Alhamdulillah for all His Blessings, especially good health in body, mind and soul. Yes one of the most unfortunate thing that can befall on us is the loss of memory. One of the causes is of course a silent stroke because of the lack of supply of oxygen to the brain which is carried via the blood. Blood thickness can one of the contributory factor which can be blocked from reaching the brain.
Let us all keep in touch and if I come across the website of our brothers in POP, I shall alert you, ya akhi.
Salam Ramadan Al-Mubarak to all of you.
