Wan My Grandma

During my childhood days, I used to sit on the 'mengkuang' mat in front of my maternal grandmother whom I called 'Wan' in the still of the night at my Kampong in Terachi, Kuala Pilah. She also weaved the mat from the mengkuang leaves which had been cut in long strips and dried.
In silence of nights
By the flicker of oil lamp
Sat the urn on mat

This is the posting that caught me unprepared and almost brought me to tears, Akhi Halim, for it's exactly how i used to spend the night with my grandma- Uwan. She weaved the mengkuang into a mat while i sat beside her reading from an oil lamp. We worked and sometimes talked until late night, just the two of us. When my Auntie and her two girls returned home they took over all of my grandma's time and I too left for the university. We never got together like we used to anymore. Muga-muga Allah mencurahkan rahmatNya atas kedua-dua uwan kita.

Akhi Norzah,
We share our fondness of our late 'Uwan' which will be embedded in our memory forever. My 'Uwan' was the tower of strength and compassion whenever her emotional support was needed in my early childhood. After all Ulu Bendol and Terachi batu 16 is so near. I think you remember 'kedai kurung' which has disappeared after the Emergency was over.May ALLAH Bless their souls and place them amongst the pious.
